Grab a fiddle because Battle of the Bows is back in Jennings

JENNINGS, La. (KPLC) - If you’re a fan of Cajun music, then make your way down to the Battle of The Bows Cajun fiddle contest where players of all ages come together to share a bond of Cajun culture and music.

The competition began seven years ago and has now become an annual event that people make the trek for, all in the name of keeping Cajun culture alive. Musical Instruments

Doug Dugas and Ken Lyon are the group’s organizers and encourage everyone to come and listen.

Lyon said it’s unique to watch the younger generations perform because they are the future of Cajun music.

“The youth is the key to preserving our culture and our heritage,” said Lyon.

They have a junior competition, youth competition, adult competition, senior competition, a professional category and a twin fiddle competition.

The twin fiddle competition is with two musicians playing together at the same time but in the same age range.

It is open to all Cajun-style fiddle players of any age and performance level. There is no registration fee but the deadline to enter is 30 minutes before the beginning of the event.

Another unique side of this competition is that the three judges are experienced fiddle players.

“We picked experienced fiddle players because they are better qualified to listen to the music being played and how it is being played,” said Lyon.

The three judges will judge on qualities like intonation, use of double stops, and the overall difficulty that the contestants chose to play.

This year’s contest will be in the Strand Theatre on 432 North Main Street in Jennings on Saturday, Nov. 4 beginning at 9 a.m.

Cash prizes will be awarded for every category with over $4,200 to be divided among the first, second, and third place winners.
