It can be shockingly versatile.
Yes, we’re talking about corsets as in the Victorian undergarment. Once uncomfortable and restrictive, the fashion world has reclaimed corsets in a major way. They’ve been reimagined as chic, comfortable, and even casual, says fashion expert Lindsey Bernay, author of You Can’t Leave the House Naked. Similarly, where they were once representative of a restrictive beauty standard, they’re now aligned with female empowerment and self-expression, adds fashion expert Jaymi Washburn, co-founder and designer of JMP the Label. So, for that reason alone it makes sense that corset fashion is trending, but anything with a nostalgic touch is also very popular—and corsets are no exception, adds Bernay. matching underwear sets
All that being said, it can be admittedly tricky to figure out how exactly to wear a corset and make it look, well, not like an undergarment. When it comes to styling corset fashion, there are a few things to keep in mind:
“A corset should cinch the waist comfortably and support your bust without discomfort,” notes Washburn. Go too tight and you can end up with ‘spillage’ out of the top and bottom, she says, adding that options with adjustable lacing allow you to best customize the fit to your body.
Bernay says that using a corset as a foil against a contrasting piece of clothing is one fun way to embody the trend. For example, pair a structured corset top with a flowy, midi skirt for a feminine look. Or, try a satin corset, and wear it with ripped jeans, a combo that’s the perfect mix of glam and grit, she says.
Corsets most definitely don’t have to be a stand-alone fashion item. Washburn says wearing one under a blazer along with trousers makes for an unexpected outfit for a night out, and could even pass for business casual. And, if you prefer to be slightly more covered up, you can always wear a corset over a button-down shirt for a layered, dimensional look, says Bernay.
It doesn’t just have to be a top. “If you love the shape of a corset but want a more modest option, a dress with a corset silhouette is a great way to try the trend,” says Bernay.
